
Why Quartz Heaters are a Total Win for Baking
Most ovens are slow. They spend way too much time heating up the air around the food, which just feels like waiting around for nothing. We do things differently. By using clear quartz radiant heaters, we skip the middleman. These tubes shoot short-wave infrared radiation straight onto the surface of your bread. It’s a complete shift in how the heat works. Instead of a slow climb, you go from zero to 300°C in a few seconds. It’s fast. Really fast.
How the speed actually works
Here’s the secret: quartz glass doesn’t have much “thermal mass.” Pair that with a high-watt tungsten filament, and you’ve got a heater that doesn’t need to “warm up” before it starts working. The energy just jumps from the filament to your bread almost instantly. We build these for high-intensity bursts. If you hook them up to a PID controller and an SSR, you can basically pulse the power. This lets you keep the temperature in a very tight window. You get that perfect, golden crust without worrying about burning the outside while the middle is still doughy.
The trade-offs you should know about
We use clear quartz because it lets infrared energy fly right through. Some tubes have coatings that bounce heat backward, but clear quartz just lets it go straight to the product. But, there’s a catch. You have to be careful with them. Quartz is picky about “thermal shock” and dirt. If a bit of grease or flour dust lands on a hot tube, it creates a hot spot. That’s usually when the glass cracks or the filament snaps. To keep things running, I’d suggest a protective shield or just being really disciplined about cleaning the oven gallery.
Fitting them into your setup
These are designed to slide right into high-end commercial baking lines. Because they pack so much heat into every inch, you can actually make your oven smaller without slowing down your production. Just one heads-up: make sure your power supply can handle the initial surge. Those first few seconds of ignition pull a lot of current, so your electrical setup needs to be ready for it.
