
Why Your Heating Lamps Keep Popping (and How to Stop It)
If you’ve ever put heating lamps in a bathroom or a livestock pen, you know the nightmare. One stray drop of water hits a glowing hot bulb, and—pop—you’ve got glass everywhere. It’s a mess, it’s dangerous, and it’s a total pain to replace. Most quartz tubes just can’t handle that kind of shock. When a cold droplet hits a surface running at 600°C, the glass panics and cracks. That’s why we switched to explosion-proof quartz. It’s all about the stress. Standard quartz is decent, but “explosion-proof” is a different beast. We treat the glass so it can handle wild temperature swings without losing its cool. In a shower or a chicken coop, you’re dealing with constant steam and random splashes. The quartz wrap acts like a tight seal for the tungsten filament inside. It keeps the oxygen out and the heat in, so the lamp doesn’t just give up the ghost the second things get damp. Finding the sweet spot. We use high-purity quartz because it plays nice with electricity, even when the air is thick with humidity. You don’t want sparks jumping around where they shouldn’t. But there’s a bit of a balancing act here. If we make the glass walls too thin, the heat moves faster, but the tube becomes fragile. If we make them too thick, it’s tough as nails but doesn’t heat as well. We’ve found a middle ground where the tube can take a few accidental bumps without turning into a hazard. A few things to keep in mind. The best part? These things are instant. You don’t have to sit around waiting for a heating element to slowly wake up; you flip the switch, and you’ve got heat. But here’s the catch: they gethot. Like, really hot. You have to be smart about your brackets. If you mount these too close to plastic or anything that can catch fire, you’re going to melt your fixtures. Just make sure you’ve got some breathing room and decent ventilation so you don’t trip the safety switches in your control box.
