
Getting the Wattage Right for Your Bathroom Heater
When you’re picking out infrared lamps for a bathroom, you aren’t just shopping for a lightbulb. You’re trying to figure out how to keep someone warm in a room that’s basically designed to steal heat. Between the exhaust fans and those freezing cold tiles, the warmth disappears fast. I’ve seen too many people go overboard with the wattage, which is a great way to trip a breaker. On the flip side, some go too low, and the person stepping out of the shower is still shivering.
Finding the Sweet Spot
The math seems simple—more space equals more power—but it’s not quite that linear. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a single 400W to 600W shortwave lamp usually does the trick. But for a bigger master bath (around 6m² to 10m²), you’ll want to move up to 800W or 1200W units. Here’s the thing: don’t worry about heating the whole room. Infrared doesn’t actually warm up the air; it warms the person. If you put a 1500W lamp in a small stall, you’re going to bake the user in about two minutes. Focus on the “heat zone” instead.
The Trade-offs
Higher wattage means the heat hits you almost instantly. A 1200W lamp is fast. Really fast. But that speed comes with a cost on your electrical panel. You have to make sure your wiring can handle that peak current without popping a fuse. If you’re putting in a few different units, try staggering the power phases or use a controller. It prevents that massive surge of power from hitting all at once.
Where to Put Them (and Safety)
Since we’re talking about bathrooms, waterproofing is a big deal. We use sealed quartz envelopes because the last thing you want is moisture hitting the filament. As for placement, keep them at least 2.1 meters high. Any lower and the heat feels too intense—almost stinging. Just make sure you space them out properly. You don’t want “cold spots” where someone is freezing while standing just a foot away from the lamp. You want that warmth to wrap around the shower or vanity area perfectly.
