
Getting Heat Where It Actually Matters in PET Preforms
If you’ve spent any time around high-speed PET blowing, you know the struggle. You’re trying to push the heat deep into the center of the preform wall, but the surface is already starting to scorch. It’s a frustrating balancing act. That’s why we built our replacement lamps for SIG Blomax (4 through 10) and Husky HyPET systems differently. We focused on short-wave infrared penetration. In plain English? We make sure the heat actually gets inside the plastic. The trick is in the power. To keep up with the cycle times these machines demand, you can’t just throw raw wattage at the problem. You need the right wattage-to-length ratio. We’ve tuned the voltage and filament density so the thermal flux punches through that outer “skin” and hits the core. But a word of caution: if you’re running these at full tilt, your oven’s airflow has to be spot on. If it’s not, you’ll get hot spots. And nobody wants to see that cloudy, pearlescent look in their finished bottles. No fuss, no rewiring. We use high-purity quartz glass because, let’s be honest, these things take a beating in a 24/7 plant. We shifted the spectral output to those shorter wavelengths to get that deeper penetration we talked about. And don’t worry about the install. We use industry-standard connectors. You just pop them in. No rewiring sockets, no modifying holders, no headaches. What happens on the shop floor? When you swap these into a Blomax or Husky oven, you’ll notice the temperature profile across the preform is just… steadier. It feels more controlled. One quick tip: since these lamps push more power into the plastic, your cooling blowers are going to work a bit harder. If your cooling system is getting old, the oven might run a little warmer than usual. Do yourself a favor—check your blower filters while you’re changing the lamps. It’ll keep everything in balance and save you a lot of grief later.
