
Fixing the “Hot Spot” Headache in KHS Preform Heating
Ever pull a bottle off the line and see those annoying pearlescent streaks or, worse, actual burnt spots? It’s a nightmare. Usually, it happens because your KHS blow molding machine isn’t heating the preform evenly. You end up with thin walls in some places and weak spots in others. We got tired of seeing that happen, so we built our own high-end infrared lamps. They fit KHS specs perfectly, but we tweaked them to actually fix those gaps in heat distribution. The science part (kept simple) Here’s the thing: it all comes down to the quartz tube. We spent a lot of time messing with the tungsten filament density and the purity of the quartz. Why? Because we wanted the short-wave infrared to actually soak into the PC or PET wall, not just sear the surface. If you’re running a high-speed line, even a tiny dip or spike in voltage can send your temperatures haywire. That’s why we build these tubes to hold a tight tolerance from one end to the other. No surprises. Plug, play, and forget it You don’t need to rewire your entire shop to use these. They’re drop-in replacements. We used standard industrial connectors, so you can just swap them into your existing racks and get back to work. We also reinforced the quartz glass. KHS ovens blast high-velocity cooling air, and that can be brutal on a lamp. Plus, we added a special coating that bounces the heat back toward the preform. It keeps the heat where it belongs and stops you from wasting energy. One thing to watch out for Now, there is a trade-off. These modules pump out a massive amount of thermal energy in a matter of seconds. If your oven’s exhaust is clogged or just too small for the job, that heat has nowhere to go. The ambient temperature inside the oven will start to climb, and your preforms might start deforming before they even hit the mold. Just make sure your airflow settings are dialed in to match the lamp wattage. Keep the air moving, and you’re golden.
